The UniFi Smart Flood Light, up close
This is the Ubiquiti UniFi Smart Flood Light. One Cat6 run powers it — 802.3af PoE straight from the switch, no 240V out to the wall, no plug pack. A PIR sensor in the base picks up movement out to 5 metres, and a built-in light sensor keeps it off during the day.
Everything about how it behaves is set in the UniFi Protect app: how bright it runs, how long it stays on after a trigger, how sensitive the sensor is, and whether it fires only after dark or around the clock. There's even a log of every detection.

A standard sensor light reacts to anything warm that moves. Paired with a UniFi Protect camera, this one responds to what the camera detects — so the light comes on for the thing you actually care about, and the footage of it is lit. One camera can trigger several floodlights at once, which is how you light a whole side path or yard from a single detection.

Security lighting questions we get
Do I need UniFi cameras for smart security lighting to work?
The floodlight is built for the UniFi Protect ecosystem, so it's managed through a Protect console (like a Dream Machine or NVR). You don't have to run cameras — the built-in motion sensor works on its own — but pairing it with cameras is where security lighting gets clever, and it's how we usually install it.
Does PoE security lighting need an electrician?
The floodlight runs on extra-low voltage PoE over Cat6 — no mains cabling to the fitting. If an existing 240V sensor light needs to be removed first, a licensed electrician handles that part and we coordinate it as one job.
How far away does the UniFi floodlight pick up movement?
The built-in PIR sensor reaches about 5 metres, and its sensitivity is adjustable in the app. Pair it with a camera and the effective range jumps — the camera sees much further than the PIR, and its detections can fire the light from across the yard.
Is the UniFi floodlight weatherproof?
IPX5 rated in a polycarbonate and aluminium housing, rated from −10 to 45°C — Brisbane summers included. It ships with both a flat wall mount and an angle mount, so eaves, walls and posts are all fine.
How bright is 550 lumens?
Roughly a decent porch or entry light — targeted rather than blinding, and you can wind the brightness up or down in the app. For wide areas we position multiple units (one camera can trigger them all together), and the quote says exactly how many and where.
What colour is the UniFi floodlight — warm or cool?
Fixed colour temperature, and Ubiquiti doesn't publish the exact Kelvin figure for it — it reads as a neutral white on the ground. Brightness adjusts in the app; colour doesn't, on this fitting or any other way. If warm-versus-cool control matters to you, that's a commercial luminaire ordered with a tunable-white option, not a security floodlight.
What happens to the floodlight in a blackout?
No power, no light — same as any fitting. Because it's powered from the switch, putting the switch on a small UPS keeps your cameras and floodlights running through short outages. Worth doing, and we'll quote it.
What does smart security lighting cost?
