Could a home really run its lights on PoE?
It's the question every smart-home forum asks — and the honest answer is yes, for most of the lights in the house. LED downlights, strips and pendants sit comfortably inside a PoE port's power budget, and a home's worth of Cat6 runs is a routine cabling job when the walls are open.
The practical design puts living areas, bedrooms and outdoor security lighting on the network, and leaves high-draw fittings — bathroom heat lamps, oven lights — on conventional circuits. You get per-light control where it matters without forcing PoE where it doesn't.

Lighting joins the same network as everything else in the house. No hub-of-the-week, no cloud account per light bulb.
Extra-low voltage in the ceiling
The cabling above your head is Cat6, not 240V. Fittings feed from the switch in the comms cupboard — the same place your internet already lives.

A small UPS on the switch keeps chosen lights, cameras and Wi-Fi alive through short outages. Try that with conventional circuits.

Home PoE lighting questions we get
Could a new home run PoE for all its lights?
Most of them, yes. LED downlights, strips and pendants sit comfortably inside a port's power budget. The design usually keeps high-draw fittings like heat lamps on conventional circuits, and we map exactly which lights go on the network in the lighting plan.
Can PoE lighting be retrofitted into an existing home?
Sometimes. It comes down to ceiling access for the Cat6 runs — accessible roof space makes it realistic, closed cavities usually mean waiting for a reno. Send photos of your roof space with your enquiry and we'll tell you straight.
Does home PoE lighting need an electrician?
The PoE lights and their cabling are extra-low voltage — fed over Cat6 from a switch that plugs into a normal outlet. Decommissioning existing 240V fittings is electrician work, and we coordinate it as one job.
What happens to the lights in a blackout?
Same as normal lights — unless the switch is on a small UPS, which keeps selected lights, cameras and Wi-Fi running through short outages. Cheap add, quoted by default.
What does PoE lighting cost for a home?
Driven by how many lights go on the network and how the cable gets there. New builds are cheapest because the walls are open. Site walk and written quote are free, and the quote is fixed.
Does it work with my smart home or UniFi gear?
Already on UniFi? The security lighting side joins your system directly. For broader smart-home integration it depends on your setup — we confirm the integration path in the lighting plan before you commit to anything.
